Nearly 40 years ago, when you saw that school cricket in London was declining, you decided to do something about it. In 1989, you and a small group of passionate people created Capital Kids Cricket (CKC) — with limited funds, but with a huge vision: to make sure children in London’s state schools had the opportunity to play cricket.
History will tell the story of how, many years later, other organisations and governing bodies began putting greater focus on schools and community cricket. All of that has been good for our game. But the pioneering work that you and your team started deserves to be remembered.
Since 1989, CKC has continued taking curriculum cricket into state schools and creating opportunities for thousands of young people, many of whom might otherwise never have experienced the game.
Your legacy is not simply an organisation you helped to establish. It is in the generations of children who picked up a bat or ball because CKC came into their school; the coaches and volunteers who followed your vision; and the opportunities that continue to be created today.
On a personal note, I feel incredibly fortunate to have known you and to have spent more than 18 years learning, working and growing under your guidance and to continue carrying forward the vision you started.
Some legacies receive headlines and recognition. Others can be seen in the lives they have changed. Yours is certainly one of those.
Happy 90th Birthday, Haydn. You are a true legend of London grassroots cricket, and your contribution to young people and the game will live on for generations.
